Question for single people, who have no kids, that live on Oahu?

This question is for all my single people out there in Hawaii.. If you live in Hawaii especially on Oahu, single and live on your own, how much do u think someone with no kids, but single should make yearly to live comfortable, without any worries? This including food, rent/utility, laundry, car insurance/gaseline, cell phone bill, hospital bill and miscellaneous bills.. If ur living comfortable or not, can u please share ur thoughts whether or not if u enjoy living on ur own or would u perfer having a roommate to help pay the bills? It would be very helpful to get an honest opinion. Much aloha and mahalo.

Question for single people, who have no kids, that live on Oahu?
I am 29 and single.

I bought my townhouse in Waikele (Oahu) 1.5 years ago.

I own my car (no payments).

I live alone.

Minimum comfortable living is about $50,000 gross per year.

Recommend a minimum of $65,000 gross per year.

I had roommates when I first moved to the island 4 years ago. They were more trouble than they were worth. However, just starting my job with no previous assests, I had to have a roommate for financial reasons.

To live alone-

Rent: expect to pay $1500 per month

Electricity: expect to pay around $100 per month.

Gas: expect to pay $40-150 per month (depending on your car and commute distance)

Food: expect to pay $300-$500 per month (food is expensive here).

Car Insurance: expect to pay $50-$150 per month

Renter's Insurance: expect to pay $175 per year
Reply:Rent in a good area is about 1500 to 2000 for a decent one bedroom. I would recommend getting into one of the highrises as they are less likely to have a roach problem and be run down. I would say to live comfortably you would need 4-5000 a month. Getting a roomate is a matter of personal preference. Although, if they are a slacker you may end up covering all of the rent. You are paid more in Hawaii due to the high cost of living and bonuses are offered at many jobs.
Reply:The guy above me did a great job answering your question! And his numbers look pretty accuate. I'm single, in my 20s and lived on Oahu for a little over a year. I think you can live comfortably on more like $40,000 a year but it all depends on where your going to live/ how extravagant of live you want to live. I'm a stingy person in general... If you don't mind living in an older house away from Honolulu then you can find rent for more like $1200 and thats probably a 2 bedroom. But if you like having all the new toys in life then yes you'll need more than $50,000! Most enlisted military are making close to $40,000 with their cost of living adjustment so thats a pretty good number to base your opinion on. If you want to buy a house/condo, then your going to need to make at least $60,000 or so. Your best bet is to move out here and find a roommate right off and then later on move out on your own. With all the military out here, there are lots of people looking for roommates( rent.com, craiglist). I definitely enjoy living on my own but having roommates is a great way to get to know the island right off the bat after you move out here. I have a really good job but if I had an average paying job then I would definitely have roommates. And most Hawaiians live with multiple families in a single home anyways. You're going to have real sticker shock at first when you move out here and it will take a couple months to get use to the prices! ($5 gallon milk, gas is always over $3) Either way, living in Hawaii is amazing and you should definitely move out here. It's an amazing opportunity!
