Why are single people sometimes treated with pity, as if they could never be truly happy?

I'm currently single. To be honest, I like it this way and couldn't see myself changing things for a long time, if ever. Why do some people (especially relatives) think that you absolutely MUST have a significant other to be complete? Why couldn't it be possible to live a satisfying life as a single person? I have other single friends, men and women, who join me in doing all kinds of fun things and we are somewhat like a 'family' if you will.

Why are single people sometimes treated with pity, as if they could never be truly happy?
Because regardless of how you feel about it, many if not most single people would like to have a partner.
Reply:I don't know! Now, I'm married...I got married at age 29. But, I had a VERY long stretch of being single and happy! My own place, no one expecting to leave their toothbrush at my house, etc...I sometimes laugh when my husband's being a pain, and say "i miss my old apartment!" .There's a difference between being alone and being lonesome. When I was single, I had a similar social situation as yours...a nice big group of friends to hang out with, so it's not as though singles hide away in their homes! You do what makes you happy!
Reply:It's tradition for people to get married. Humans want to procreate and usually want to have a mate too. They might not understand that you enjoy being single because they don't want to be, and they're not surrounded by single people. It's not common - though it's becoming somewhat more common. So, just let them assume there's something wrong with it, unless you want to try to change their entire perspective of being single.
Reply:I agree with you. You can be single and be happy. I don't miss the drama.
Reply:b/c they feel like we can never be truly happy unless you have a mate
Reply:Because those who have partners can't stand the idea the we might be happy while they are so miserable...LMAO
Reply:I know exactly what you mean. That's the life I am currently living and envisioning till the day I die. What do I need a man for? I'd rather not be distracted from my personal fulfillment. Nice to see that there are some men who feel that way. You get the Rio Madeira Seal of Approval!
Reply:that sounds kind of nice

I think its nice to share a bed with somebody

somebody to hold and be held by

I could deal with being single for a year or so , if I had friends and sex partners

not longer than that
