Filing Single when divorced in mid year?

I was single at the end of the year. So I assume I must file single. However, they were only taking taxes out as married through the year until I was divorced. Why do I have to file as if I were single the entire year?

As far as filing statue, the rule is your status is whatever you were on the last day of the year. So if you were married on 12/31 for tax purposes you are considered married for the entire year, the same is trur for divorced.
Reply:Because that's how Congress wrote the rules - your status for the year depends on your status the last day of the year.
