Just heard a single mother has been ordered to pay "the music industry" $220.000US for downloading 24 songs. It makes me sick.
How about the music industry go after the pirates in China, or even in the US who download, distribute and for profit sell artists music. No lets go after the single mother...Sure fine the lady a couple hundred bucks, but $220.000???
This country is sick. Just for this I wil NEVER EVER buy a CD again!
We should make an account and each of us pay that woman $1 to cover her legal fees. Cause weve all done it....
Single mother fined $220.000?
Get off your soap box.....illegal is illegal, we all know it........and its the chance you choose to take, and if you get caught, well, thats what can and does happen.............
Reply:This will surely be appealed - it is an abberation in a process that is a foregone conclusion. She won't be made to pay a cent. Report It
Reply:Well, she was dumb enough to go to trial rather than accept a plea bargain. To-date the RIAA has been rather flexible and lenient in dealing with people they have filed suits against. The average settlement has been for a couple of thousand dollars which is basically just enough to make folks stop doing it.
Just because she is a single mother does not absolve her from the fact that she broke the law. Where is it legislated that single mothers are allowed to break the law while others cannot?
Reply:I agree
I could see a couple hundred dollar fine, but $220,000 is outrageous. This shows that music industry is greedy and heartless and doesn't deserve our respect or support.
Reply:She did wrong and was caught. It is up to her to pay the fine imposed upon her.
Reply:They are charging her $9,166.66 per song??????
That is sick but I guess they want to make an example out of some one
Reply:She actually shared 1,702 songs but the lawsuit was focused on only 24 songs. And she was offered to settle for a few thousand dollars.
It is not the fact that she "downloaded" the songs, her mistake was that she "shared" what she downloaded therefore violating copyright laws.
Reply:How the heck did she even get caught? I think we could start a riot of saying don't buy cds, but I totally agree that is really stupid of them to do that, it's not like the music industry is broke or anything!!
Reply:Where i stay they sold pirated are not acceptable, still those CD are sold in the market once caught each CD or VCD are confiscated and for each disc will cost $1000 per piece.or jail for one day with fine of $5000 bail.
What she did was wrong, but paying that sum of money is ridiculous to say. if each song was to cost filthy dollars per song she don't have to pay $220,000 for 24 songs she only pay $1,200 that 24 songs.
Another thing she can do is admit that she did download the song not knowing that she be fine so much go to a subordinate court to settle her problem for her and the court will rule u out at $220,000 is bribery not payment of cost of the CDs
