Why do single people pay extra single supplement for travelling alone?

I understand if you want to occupy a double, that's fair enough, but when single rooms are generally small and poly why should we be penalised for travelling alone? I would have thought that it is in the companies interest to give single travellers an incentive to travel alone. After all we are valid customers too!!

Why do single people pay extra single supplement for travelling alone?
Good question! When I was single, it p*ssed me off that I had to pay more just because of the fact that I wasnt together with someone! Rediculous! There are various travel agencies who speciaise in Single Holidays (eg www.travelone.co.uk), but that is not the answer for me. I dont want to be treated differently, just because I dont have a man by my side.

Some people just dont have a partner, which is sad enough ( if you are unhappy being single, of course), but having to pay for your marital situation is absurd.
Reply:Yes it's crap isn't it. I believe that it is because if it is one person, the hotel do not make so much profit out of the meals etc ( plus the single person occupies one whole table in the restaurant) so this is like a form of "compensation" for revenue the hotel believes it has lost.

It's all just a scam of course. Single people should just refuse to pay the supplement. and there ARE agencies which do not charge single person supplements- mind you, they probably just get the money in other ways.
Reply:The supplements normally cover the charges from the hotels for not having full occupancy in a room.

The space within a hotel is at a premium so they charge extra for single rooms or for double rooms with only one person occupying them.

There will be supplements if a family of four take a villa meant to sleep six.
Reply:We live in a society based on breeding. Didn't you get the memo?

If you don't have kids, you're not wanted. Not enough of a profit margin.
Reply:Sure singles are valid customers but it is simple... Without double occupancy the hotels, or ships, lose out on the other income. A single room never goes for half of what a double goes for so they try to make the lost income up.
