Why are single people who travel with a tour company charged an extra fee?

I had planned to take a trip to the western part of USA with a travel group and was told I would have to pay $600.00 extra if I went as a single person. Why am I being charged such a fee? If I checked into a Hotel by myself the hotel does not charge me double so I don't buy the extra fee due to accomodations. I truly feel it is because travel companies think single travelers will not spend as much as couples thus they feel they are losing money and tax single people. What do you think? I enjoy traveling alone and should be able to do so w/o going broke.

Your assumptions are correct. It's to make up for the loss of profit.
