I hear so much of the time about how so-and-so is a single mom and it's great that she's strong and independent and trying to do two things at the same time. What about single dads?
Considering that the majority of the time the women get sole custody of the kids at first initially, where is the love for single dads who have to get the kids away from bad mothers?
I'm not a single dad myself lol. I'm 19 and go to college, but it just had me wondering. Single dads should get more praise in society...if they're doing what's right as a father.
Where is the love for single dads?
I absolutely agree! I'm a single mom with an 11 year old daughter.
Here's my question - are you talking about single dad's raising their children or single dad's who get their kids every other weekend?
I agree that there are moms out there who have custody of their children - and have no business raising a dog - much less a child. And the dad's fight like h3ll to get their kids to little or no avail.
Dad's raising their kids deserve the praise and kudos, too - it's tough to raise a child by yourself, mom or dad. It's just much more rare to hear of a dad that not only wants to raise their kids - but is able to raise their kids!
Reply:I agree any single parent should get praise, not just single mums, single dads go through the same thing as a single mum so why not?
Reply:There just are not as many single dads willing to take on the full responsibility of the children. The majority rules so you will hear more about the moms than the dads.
Reply:my soon to be hubby was a single father for 7 years...and my step son's mother is horrific...and I agree with you...single dads don't get near the praise they should...they don't even get equal treatment in the court systems ( but don't start me on that..) so kuddos to you for thinking about single dads and great job to all the single fathers out there..
Reply:I'm a single mom of four and my older brother is a single dad of two. It's not something we do for praise we do it because we love our kids.
Reply:You're single in your 20s and you're alone in your 40s.
Reply:Single dads do get praise... you just hear about single moms more because there are LOTS more of them. The ratio is probably out of this world.
Reply:your right. but sadly its not that often who hear stories of single daddies.
whoever can devote themselves entirely to another little being gets my praise
Reply:You seem to have forgotten that we men are all chauvanistic, misogynistic bastards who can't possibly have parenting skills nor do we have any right to say what happens to unborn babies because it's not our bodies that they come from.
Or at least that's what a lot of women want society to believe.
Reply:Oh trust me, I have a lot of respect for single dads
Reply:I agree 100%. And I also think that people need to stop assuming that just because a mother has primary custody, it means the father is a bad person, deadbeat, and it's not always the case.
I actually think it's a hell of a lot more even in terms of who has custody now a days then it was years ago. Yes, courts do still sort of cater to mother's getting custody but times are slowly changing. Judges are slowly realizing that not ALL mothers are the best parent. And they do what's right by the kids.
Just my opinion
Reply:there is love for single dads, there just aren't too many of them so you don't hear as much. many major cities have clubs just for single dads.
Reply:I think they should be appreciated, but there's not as many of them as there are single moms, so they don't get as much attention. In divorce cases, the judge almost always grants custody to the mother unless she is completely un-fit to be a parent. In some cases, I think the children should definitely have been allowed to stay with their Dad!
Reply:I give single dads (as in ones who raise the kids full - time, not just pick them up two weekends a month to take them out for pizza) a lot of credit. As someone else said, it's just that there are a LOT more single mothers than single fathers. Also, a single father is more likely to be seen as a hero - he's raising those poor kids all by himself, when he doesn't "have" to. When it comes to single moms, people often see raising kids as an obligation for her - she's SUPPOSED to be raising her kids, so why should she deserve any extra credit? People are also more likely to assume that she messed up her life, is on welfare, etc.
The bottom line is that ALL single parents who step up to the plate and make an extra effort to take on the job of two parents deserve a pat on the back.
Reply:Single dads DO get praise. The thing is, there aren't that many of them. There are significantly more single mothers than single fathers.
And, there are a few reasons for this: nowadays, more women CHOOSE to be single mothers (a man can't choose to be a single father as he doesn't bare the child), courts favour the mother in most cases or offer joint custody, and men generally aren't as willing to take care of children all on his own (which means they often don't fight the courts for full custody).
I've only known a handful of single fathers through my life. One was my husband, another was my own father. The rest weren't single fathers by choice--the mother died leaving the dad the children to take care of on his own. But, even with that said, I've known probably 10 times the single mothers than single fathers.
